Description
Lithium deuteride is a white solid, produced by the reaction of molten metal 6Li and deuterium gas. It is a stable compound that can be transported and stored. Decomposes with water to generate deuterium gas and 6LiOH. It is the main part of the hydrogen bomb charging and can also be used as the charging material for the controlled nuclear fusion device. 6Li undergoes 6Li(n,α)3H(T) reaction under thermal neutron irradiation, and the reaction cross section is as high as 942b. The generated deuterium can undergo a fusion reaction with tritium D+T→4He+n+17.62MeV. The ignition temperature of the reaction is 4×10^7K, which is the lowest ignition temperature among all fusion reactions. When used as a hydrogen bomb charge, the explosive power of 1 kg6LiD is equivalent to that of 50,000 tons of trinitrotoluene.
